Biography

Gustavo Romo is a first generation American born to immigrant parents who came to the U.S. from Mexico in the 1960’s in pursuit of the American dream.  The family initially settled in East Los Angeles where Gustavo and his older brother were born.  After a couple of years, they discovered the beautiful town of Baldwin Park and made it their permanent home.  Gustavo, known as Gus since he was a child, is the second oldest of four brothers.  He and his older brother attended St. John’s Catholic School for one year but had to transfer to public school due to costs.

Gus then attended Tracy Elementary, Sierra Vista Junior High, and Sierra Vista High School where he graduated as Salutatorian with a 4.0 GPA.  He received a Navy ROTC scholarship to attend Pepperdine University and UCLA but decided to transfer his second year to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Urban and Regional Planning at Cal Poly Pomona University.  His decision was based on his love for the built environment and an eagerness to learn about city planning.  After working for the Cities of Azusa, San Bernardino, and Santa Monica and a few private firms, Gus worked to obtain his MBA from the University of Redlands and went on to establish his own consulting firm in 2001.

Gus has served in more than 20 communities throughout Southern California as a City Planner and Community Development Director.  After working for the City of Irwindale for four years, he was presented with the opportunity to work for his home town of Baldwin Park when the position of Community Development Director became available.  He started in July of 2017.

Gus has been married to his wife Elizabeth for 24 years.  They have two daughters.  The eldest daughter is a university student at Cal Poly Pomona who will be graduating in 2018 with a Bachelor’s Degree.  His younger daughter is in the 6th grade and loves singing, dancing and gymnastics.  Gus is very happy to be a part of the Baldwin Park family and is eager to assist the Mayor, City Council, and CEO pursue and promote economic development, smart and sustainable growth, infrastructure improvements, and healthy lifestyles for the residents, business owners and community partners of Baldwin Park.
